Scott Brick is giving you an audiobook free sample! Click to hear the first chapter of Lord Foul's Bane by Stephan R. Donaldson! Scott's the man! I would listen to him narrate paint drying!
io9.com is quickly becoming one of my favorite places on the web to hang out. They're feeding my sound design obsession with this awesome mega-post of the most iconic sound effects in scifi history!
In other audiobook news, Voiceregistry has a two part interview with Alfred Molina, on his work in audiobooks, VO, and narration! Part 1 Part 2

I'm SO STOKED for Iron Man, it's kinda silly. Robert Downey Jr is the PERFECT pick for Tony Stark. Gaming Today has a great behind the scenes video on the making of the Iron Man video game staring Downey.

Scott Brick starts his own blog
Hey all,Just caught this over at Bob Souer's blog, so I'm posting it on my blog, so we can all go read Scott's blog, and blog about blogging ... blog ...
Smurfing hell...
Seriously though, Scott starts his blog off with a great story on trying to track down Flemish swearing pronunciations. Awesome!
Audiobook narration can be an overlooked avenue in the wide word of VO, and I'm sure Scott's insights will prove invaluable to this community.

News Sound Bites - high end audio, Telcos given immunity, art of audiobooks, more...
Hey lets get to it!
The Consumerist (through Slate) takes a look at high end audio systems. I think it's funny to do that as most people listen to some form of compressed audio. Even CD's (to an extent) are not full representations of the sounds we hear.
Wired's Threat Level kindly informs us that our government is getting ready to sell us out again, by offering amnesty to Telecoms that spy on us, without the involvements of the courts, on behalf of the American government. Yay! GOOOOOOO WARRANTLESS!!!!
I love reading Katherine Powers' audiobook reviews over at Book World and The Washington Post. This link is out to four more short reviews to check out.
Sound Designers, Puremagnetik has released their Technosphere toolbox. I'll let Sonicstate tell you about it:
If you're looking for even more Voice and Audio news. Check out The Voice Over Times, which I believe just went live today. I've already checked it out, and they've got some decent talent writing articles, and some very helpful content. That is, go check them out AFTER you've finished reading through my archives...

Martin Jarvis makes this book a greater pleasure to listen to than to read, his extraordinary vocal characterizations transfusing it with life. Though one of his American accents is a mutinous mish-mash with a will of its own, its bearer is, fortunately, bumped off early on.Ahhhh Classic!
Sound Designers, Puremagnetik has released their Technosphere toolbox. I'll let Sonicstate tell you about it:
Puremagnetik has released Technosphere, a sound design toolbox of over 100 sonic textures and composer effects. Produced from a composite of live field recordings, studio instruments and intensive effect processing, Puremagnetik say that Technosphere brings a unique palette of soundscapes, transition effects and scoring tools to the Puremagnetik catalog.

Audiobooks help kids read gudd-er...
No really true story. When kids hear a lot of books, the tend to have an easier time reading books.
In other news, scientist determine water is necessary for the survival of plants and animals.
But seriously, I thought we had already "discovered" that parents who read to their kids, raise kids with better reading skills. I don't see how this is really that different. I mean kudos for actually crunching some numbers and all, but I can't say I'm wowed...
So Parents, read to your kids, make them read, and play audiobooks for them. America needs better kids...
Read all about it.

Audiobooks Are Getting Hip!
Two quick stories for ya'll in this post.
The first is from Business Week, about the Netflix of audiobooks, Simply Audiobooks.
"Today, the 47-employee Toronto-based company is the most successful independent player in the online audiobook rental market. That market consists of about 10 independent players, including booksfree.com and jiggerbug.com, that compete with mainstream book publishers like Random House as well as offline mom-and-pops operating in brick-and-mortar locations."
Check it out here.
The second is from Open Culture about audiobook pricing becoming more sensible.
"Until recently, the book world applied an irrational logic to downloadable audiobooks and podcasts. As we noted back in February, the paper version of the bestselling business book, The Long Tail, ran consumers $16.47 on Amazon. And yet the cheaper-to-produce audio version implausibly amounted to $31.95 on iTunes and $27.99 on Audible. Did it make sense? Hardly!"

HARRY POTTER AUDIO BOOKS!
ZoMG!!1!
Maira Oliveira has the scoop!
The Listening Library has announced that an audiobook of "Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, " J.K. Rowling's final book of the series, will be available in July. The audio will contain 784 pages and last a total of 21 hours.
21 hours? TWENTY ONE HOURS! Wow! I'll just read it...
What's surprising to me is there still hasn't been any push to sell these audiobooks as mp3's or through a service like Audible. Just like the Matrix was one of the first big DVD's to really push the format, Harry Potter could really drive digital audio books... and make even more money for JK Rowling!
The audio, which will be available in CD or cassette, features the narration of Grammy-award winner Jim Dale, who will provide the voices for all the characters. In British versions of the book, Stephen Fry has been the narrator.

AuidoBooks: Good Business for Some!
Such an obvious title for this story...
The Contra Costa Times (San Francisco?) has a pretty nice story about a successful Audiobook Narrator named Simon Vance (which I think is a made up name).
They also discuss the future of the medium, along with the recent boost in Audiobook sales, what with the whole digital ... thing going on in audio right now.
It really is a good read, though I still can't, for the life of me, find out where this newspaper really circulates.
Concord maybe?

AudioBooks Galore!

Are you into audio books?
Of course you are!
And, if you have already chewed through all the work at Librivox.org (and those Cats are COOL!), then Podiobooks might be just for you!
For more info, check THIS QUICK BLURB @ Lifehacker with links and all.
And if you enjoy the work there, think about a donation. Audiobooks are hard work, REALLY hard work, and I'm sure the artists would appreciate it.
Enjoy!

Voice Actors: GET IN SHAPE!
We've just started auditioning actors on audio books, and I had forgotten how much work is actually involved with an audio book.
If you have any interest in working in narration, or you just need something fun to keep yourself in shape, check out the folks at Librivox.org.
It's an all volunteer (read: NO PAY) site that narrates books in the public domain, and then releases the recordings back into the public domain.
I've done a little work with them, and while they might not always be the tops on technical, they're a fun and passionate group of people.
