Lost Photos - The Joy Formidable: Live Acoustic Set from SXSW

I totally thought I had lost these pics from South by Southwest!

Caught a great live set from Welsh band The Joy Formidable, and got a couple decent pics.

Here's the vid for their single "Cradle". I liked it a lot, an upbeat alt rock group with a great female lead. Dig it.

You can get both of their albums "The Big Roar" and "A Balloon Called Moaning" on Amazon!

Holy Crap! I Got to Meet Rock Photographer Robert Knight!!!

You know that really famous pic of Hendrix burning the guitar?

Yeah.

Of course you do.

That's Robert Knight, and he pretty much single handed-ly created the modern idea of rock and concert photography as we know it today.

While at the SXSW trade show I crashed the Nikon meet up (I shoot Canon, tee-hee), and while there Knight gave a talk on shooting events.

I was pretty twitterpated. Can't lie. I squealed a little...

Many thanks to Tech Blogger Extrordinaire ZOMGitsCJ for schnagging the shot of me with Robert, and if your curious about his work check out Robert Knight's Gallery on the LimeLight Agency site, or you can watch a recent documentary about Knight's work called "Rock Prophecies".

I Got to See Chris Cornell at the Belmont in Austin - AKA SXSW is Rad...

I know this is primarily a voice over blog, but I did have a brief flirtation with recording music, and since I'm at SXSW I'm going to share this one with you guys.

Because it was BRILLIANT.

Getting to hang with the Nokia crew here in Austin has been a blast, and I'm enough of a gear head that the Interactive panels and discussion have been super geekery fun, but last night I got a VIP pass to see the very first show of Chris Cornell's acoustic tour.

And it was FANTASTIC.

If you grew up when I did, bands like Soundgarden probably had a significant impact on your music tastes. I never had the opportunity to see them live though, and I always regretted that. When I heard I was going to see him live, solo, and unplugged I actually got a little nervous.

What if he wasn't as good now?

It's really satisfying in this day and age when a performer you admire, sans accoutrement, can not only live up to your expectations, but exceed them. It's rare in this age of editing that someone can genuinely sound better live than they can in a studio album.

According to the Chris Cornell website, his shows for the tour are already sold out, but if there's any way you can sneak in I would HIGHLY recommend it.

Much thanks again to WOMWorld/Nokia for bringing me out to SXSW.

I will be updating tech news on YourTechReport, and I'll be posting on two movie premiers I was able to attend over on Movies You May Have Missed.

That's right everybody. I'll be in Austin for SXSW until the 17th, hanging out with my good friends at WOMWorld Nokia !

Shoot me a message if you're around to meet up, and I'll try to keep on top of Facebook and Twitter for daily updates.

Hope to see you there!

Computer based studios and providing "Value"

Bob LeVitus at www.ecommercetimes.com, has a good article up about a SXSW panel discussion on home recording and the value of "real" studios.
  • Do recording studios and their proprietors still offer value to their customers?
  • Can a studio and its proprietor enhance an artist's strengths?
  • Is a "real" studio always the best choice?
  • It also claimed that audience questions would be answered with practical advice.
A very brief write with some really good common sense advice. I especially like the part where he tells artists to leave the engineers alone while they are working!

Read the rest here.

WHOA! RIAA OVERLOAD!

Holy CRAP! What's going on?
NYTimes, Digg, Gizmodo, Consumerist, Blogs, University News sites, They're all going crazy with stories on the RIAA, on a variety of sources, and all (oddly) seem universally against the RIAA.

So weird...

For those of you to lazy to source your own news on the future of how you listen, control, use, and own your media, here's today's rundown.

I don't like Consumerist. I don't at all. I think they get too antagonistic when it comes to apathetic employees working McJobs, instead of fighting where the problems actually come from, but one thing they are really good at is tracking down corporate contact info. Ever want to know who actually heads up the RIAA, and how to contact said individuals. Click on the link below.
Faces of the RIAA @ Consumerist

David Byrne (of the talking heads) was at SXSW, and "making sense" according to the NYTimes. Uhh neat ... I guess ... But seriously, I totally disagree with some of his assessments on artists needing labels (I think they'll be totally broken and vestigial in my lifetime at least), but on the whole it's a pretty good read.
Rocker David Byrne Making Sense at SXSW Fest

This one I don't even have a write up for. Here the RIAA just tries to explain why attacking college students with extortion tactics is good for business, and why they are upset that colleges aren't selling their (customers) students out. A fascinating look at ... well ... the main enemy to media property rights and fair use.
From insidehighered.com:
Explaining the Crackdown on Student Downloading

Ok, not directly about the RIAA, but a great blog posting on an actual Pirate (sure capital 'P'). According to the RIAA if you download music from teh intarwebs then you are a "pirate". However, I prefer a more traditional definition of pirate, where one tries to profit from their plundering, and wouldn't you know it, p2p/file sharing is really starting to hurt the people who sell bootlegs. Score a victory point for p2p!
From Torrentfreak:
P2P File-Sharing Ruins Physical Piracy Business

Man that was a lot! And really that's just the tip of the iceberg. There just seems to be a lot discontent with the media market right now. I wonder when people will start doing something about it...
