Exciting News from the Producers of Shelf Life!

This is one of those great webseries I really wish more people were watching. A fantastic collection of writers, actors, and crew delivering a funny show week after week. Think South Park meets live action Toy Story. Now this award winning series is stepping up its game!

On July 18th, the cast of Shelf Life (including animation heavy-weights Tara Platt, Yuri Lowenthal, and Travis Willingham) will be kicking off their Season 4 IndieGoGO campaign with a live interactive web party. Fans will be able to ask the cast and crew questions while going behind the scenes of how the show is produced.
The party will be live streamed at www.TheStream.tv/LIVE

If that weren't enough, those of you heading down to SDCC this year, make sure to drop by room 26AB on July 13th at 7:30pm. Members from the Shelf Life Gang including Steven Calcote, Tara Platt, Yuri Lowenthal, Stephanie Thorpe and Phil Morris will be on a panel to hang out and answer your questions! Everyone who attends that panel will also receive a limited edition Shelf Life comic book (I already got mine cuz I'm special like that), and I'm SURE they would be happy to autograph it for you.

More details at: http://www.shelflifeseries.com/

Please help spread the word on this fantastic series!

A couple pics with Tom Kenny and Jill Talley

Just had a really fun morning session with two GIANTS of voice over Tom Kenny and Jill Talley.
Just for fun I thought I'd share a couple pics!

First off Jill looking natural (I got some wacky takes, but maybe she might not like me posting them here): And of course Tom, who's already a human cartoon!

Fun ISDN Session at The Voicecaster (photo blog)

So even though most of my work comes from directing voice over casting and production sessions, I also do a bit of engineering on the side. ISDN sessions can be kind of dull, as once you've set everything up, you're pretty much just babysitting.

Well yesterday I had a really fun day of ISDN-ing. I got to work with a great bunch of actors for a series of radio spots.
First up I had the LEGENDARY Carlos Alazraqui (Reno 911, voice of the the Taco Bell dog and Rocko from 'Rocko's Modern Life). Not only is he a talented animation actor, but he crushed a dozen spots full of natural conversational announcer work. He's producing his own animated web series "Off the Curb" which looks like it'll be RIGHT up my alley.

Next up I had Larry Cedar, who happens to be a personal hero of mine. LONG before I was ever in this industry, I was a HUGE fan of Square One, which Larry was a part of. Most recently you might have seen him in the re-make of The Crazies. He's the one with the pitchfork...

And what session would be complete without a funny gal? Enter the lovely and witty Julie Wittner, who you can catch in the web show "Two Hot Girls in the Shower" starring opposite Kim Evey (producer of The Guild).

The session required her to eat cookies for sound effects. Thankfully she kept the mess of crumbs to a minimum...

Thanks for a great session guys!

Daran Norris in Live Action Fairly OddParents Movie

It's easy to forget that The Fairly OddParents have been on the air for ten years now, and to celebrate this impressive run, Nickelodeon is producing a live action, made for TV movie about Timmy Turner.

Of note is actor Daran Norris (Veronica Mars, Team America), who voices Cosmo and Mr. Turner in the series, and will be portraying the live action Mr. Turner in the movie. In speaking with Daran about the role, he mentioned something interesting. This may be the first time that an actor has originated an animated character and ALSO played a live action version of that same character.

I'm racking my brain trying to think of another time that might have happened.

Daran is a pal of mine, and was even kind enough to join us on Movies You May Have Missed for our one year anniversary episode. Fairly OddParents has had an incredible run, and I'm very excited for my friend's success!

For more info on the movie check out Nickelodeon's promo: 'A Fairly Odd Movie: Grow Up Timmy Turner' - Coming This Summer.

Jim Cummings and Tom Kenny Talk 'Winnie the Pooh'

I've had the pleasure of recording both of these legendary voice actors. Just knowing they were involved makes me MUCH less apprehensive about a new Winnie the Pooh movie.

Optimus Prime and Megatron: Together Again

I normally don't post things like this here (that's what Twitter and Facebook are for), but Peter Cullen is probably the main reason why I work in voice over today, so videos like this make me a little crazy excited.

Looks like Peter Cullen (the original voice of Optimus) and Frank Welker (the original voice of Megatron) will be working together again!

Listen to the crowd reaction when Welker fires up the classic Megatron voice...

Cool Press For 'Voice-Over Voice Actor'

I'm so proud of my friends.

Yuri Lowenthal and Tara Platt are two of my favorite people on the planet.
I was incredibly proud of them when they finished their book 'Voice-Over Voice Actor: What It's Like Behind The Mic'. It was an amazing accomplishment all on it's own, but seeing it not only in print, but for sale (and getting rave reviews) really warms the heart.

Yuri and Tara recently did an interview and a couple tutorials for BackStage.com, and I can't think of any two people more qualified to give advice on VO.

Here's Yuri's interview with Jenelle Riley:

And here's part one of Yuri and Tara's VO behind the scenes:

For more info on Voice-Over Voice Actor you can head over to http://voiceovervoiceactor.com to pick up your copy, and you can also catch my review of the book here on SomeAudioGuy (spoiler alert, I liked it).

28 Weeks Later Animated (Using Halo 3)

I usually don't post a lot on things like Machinima, but this one is kind of incredible.

What would happen if you took 44 minutes of audio from 28 Weeks Later and painstakingly animated every scene (sometimes even matching the camera angles used in the actual film) using the videogame Halo 3?

You'd get this:

Seth MacFarlane's First Cartoon: The Precursor to Family Guy

From the Youtube link:

After being hired at Hanna-Barbera Cartoons Inc., MacFarlane was given a chance in 1996 to direct a sequel entitled Larry and Steve, a seven-minute short broadcast as part of Cartoon Network's World Premiere Toons.

Although not as crude as the first short, it still retains the same random feel with sight gags that mirror gags later used in Family Guy.

Why My Wife is Awesome!

She buys me toys!

See, today is our five year anniversary, and to celebrate, she didn't buy me just ANY toy, she bought me a Japanese re-issue Soundwave Transformer.

Why is that special you ask?

Well, it's because Soundwave is the best.
I mean that. There is no cooler example of 1980's robot-that-turns-into-things than Soundwave. Originally voiced by Frank Welker (whose voice was heavily modulated for that cold robotic sound), Soundwave was really the only effective Decepticon. Megatron was always hamstrung by the machinations of Starscream, and all the other Decepticons were really just a rogues gallery of thugs and dullards (OK except for maybe Shockwave, but he was on Cybertron for most of the series).

Yup, it's all about Soundwave. He was not only an effective combatant, but he also had a whole collection of his own minion that included not only warriors but ESPIONAGE units. Soundwave was the only reason the Decepticons ever had any intel on the Autobots, not that they could ever do anything with it.

More importantly Soundwave was my entrance to the world of 1980's action cartoons.

I don't know if my parents would even remember, but our first Christmas after moving from Albuquerque to San Antonio, they gave me a Soundwave. I was five years old, but it's still a very vivid memory. I remember not being entirely sure what to think. I had watched some Transformers, but I had never had a toy like this before. Big robots. Big Guns. Totally Rad! AND IT LOOKED LIKE A WALKMAN! How cool is that!

Peter Cullen is pretty much responsible for me working in voice over today (I'll write more about that later), but I never would've found out about him if it hadn't been for Soundwave.

That's why my wife is awesome!

Just for fun, here's Soundwave doing a little pop and lock:

Happy 10th Anniversary SpongeBob! Let's Celebrate at Sundance!

Well, I wont be going to Sundance, but if you are...

SpongeBob turns TEN! What a great run for a great silly show.
I'm so excited for Tom Kenny, Rodger Bumpass, and the rest of the cast. They deserves every bit of recognition for their hard work.

For those of you at Sundance, there will be an invite only cocktail party, and Nickelodeon is staging a live cast performance on January 18th.

For those of you like me, who WONT be at Sundance, Nickelodeon has plenty more planned, including a documentary and some special guest stars (Johnny Depp).

Here's the official Nick press release:
2009 Is The Year To Get ‘Happy Squared’ As Nickelodeon Celebrates 10 Years Of SpongeBob SquarePants

Year-long Celebration of Pop Culture Icon will Include Production of SpongeBob SquarePants Documentary; First-Ever Live Cast Performance; New SpongeBob Vertical Online Site; Episode Premieres; and “Seinfeld-esque” TV Movie in November
UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. – Jan. 9, 2009 — Yellow is the new black in 2009 as Nickelodeon plans to make fans 'Happy Squared' all year long in honor of SpongeBob SquarePants’ 10th anniversary. Since its launch in July 1999, SpongeBob SquarePants has emerged as a pop-culture phenomenon with 70 million viewers monthly, and has been the number-one animated program with Kids 2-11 for more than seven consecutive years. The show is seen in 171 markets in 25 languages and is the most widely distributed property in MTV Networks’ history.
Top-ranked kids’ show SpongeBob SquarePants will make its dry-land debut in Park City, Utah, during the 2009 Film Festival with the first-ever SpongeBob live cast performance, on Jan. 18. Nickelodeon will keep the honors flowing with a new fan website for all things SpongeBob; a first-ever SpongeBob documentary; a new SpongeBob and water conservation-themed element to the network’s The Big Green Help pro-social campaign; special TV events; and new lines of apparel, jewelry, toys, games and DVDs.
“SpongeBob has been a gift that keeps on giving to kids and adults alike with its infectious sense of humor, joy and boundless optimism,” said Cyma Zarghami, President, Nickelodeon and MTVN Kids and Family Group. “After 10 years, the show remains on top of its game and at the top of the ratings, and we’re paying tribute with all kinds of content across our platforms to give our audience ample opportunity to enjoy SpongeBob throughout the year.”
SpongeBob SquarePants' voice-actors will perform a live reading of a never-before-seen episode, “SpongeBob vs. The Big One”, accompanied by a visual presentation and celebrity guest appearances, for invited guests at the Village at the Yard venue in Park City, Utah on Jan. 18. Also to mark the anniversary, Nickelodeon has commissioned the first full-length original TV documentary which will chronicle the beloved character’s evolution to international pop culture icon status. The documentary will be telecast across MTV Networks' various TV platforms to commemorate the anniversary of the series' first episode. Over the last 10 years, the porous brainchild of creator Steve Hillenburg has grown from a single Saturday morning kids' show to a certified pop culture maverick that has inspired nothing less than fun and frenzy around the world. Soaking up everything from clothing to controversy, the show has inspired people to deeply identify with the characters, to adorn themselves with SpongeBob tattoos, to use SpongeBob products to save lives and even, occasionally, to vandalize and politicize the character; but most of all, to kick back, laugh and relax.
Additionally, today (Jan. 9), Nickelodeon will launch a new vertical SpongeBob fan site in beta--http://www.spongebob.com -- the ultimate online destination where fans of all ages around the world can soak up all things SpongeBob. Both adults and kids will find an abundance of absorbing activity on the site including: an age-appropriate community, complete with personalized profiles, chat features and playlists; the ability to search for favorite SpongeBob moments or comment on the funniest videos; or a new mini-game every week. More than 300 searchable SpongeBob video clips from every episode of the series will be available on the site at launch, as well as a selection of full-length episodes from each season and brand-new episodes immediately following their on-air premieres. Fans can also participate in the backstage area
featuring a creator's blog and interviews; play the more than 100 SpongeBob-themed games; or subscribe to the “Daily Affirmation”, providing SpongeBob’s thought of the day.
Nickelodeon’s celebration will continue with new episodes throughout the year. A week of new premieres will air in March including “Grandpappy The Pirate,” featuring guest-star Dennis Quaid as Mr. Krabs’ grandfather. In April, the half-hour TV special, “SpongeBob vs. The Big One,” follows SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward and Mr. Krabs as they find themselves stranded on a remote island. The pals travel to the heart of the island where they meet an enigmatic surf guru named Jack Kahuna Laguna (voiced by guest-star Johnny Depp) who tells them that the only way back to Bikini Bottom is to surf the legendary wave -- The Big One. And in November, Nick will debut an hour-long TV movie event which finds SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward and Mr. Krabs locked inside a giant freezer on the night of the Krusty Krab’s anniversary celebration . While trapped, the friends look back on shared memories with “shocking” reveals-- similar to the iconic Seinfeld episode.
SpongeBob will also be featured as part of Nick's ongoing pro-social campaign, The Big Green Help. This year, the campaign will devote much of 2009 to raising awareness about the oceans and water conservation through SpongeBob and You Save the Big Blue--in partnership with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and the National Wildlife Federation (NWF). Save the Big Blue public service announcements will air on Nickelodeon throughout 2009 and educational activities and programs will take place at various aquariums and zoos across the country this summer. NRDC and NWF also will raise awareness with their members and incorporate Save the Big Blue messaging into their local grassroots activities.
SpongeBob SquarePants is executive produced by creator Stephen Hillenburg, who previously worked as a writer, director and creative director on Nickelodeon’s animated series Rocko’s Modern Life. Hillenburg graduated from the California Institute of the Arts with a master’s degree in experimental animation and studied marine biology and art as an undergraduate.
Paul Tibbitt served as a director and writer on SpongeBob SquarePants for its first three seasons and is currently executive producer. He wrote some of the show’s most memorable episodes such as “Ripped Pants” and “Mermaid Man & Barnacle Boy.” Tibbitt was one of the co-writers and storyboard artists on The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. SpongeBob SquarePants is a Nicktoons Production and is produced at the Nickelodeon Animation Studios in Burbank, Calif.
Nickelodeon, now in its 30th year, is the number-one entertainment brand for kids. It has built a diverse, global business by putting kids first in everything it does. The company includes television programming and production in the United States and around the world, plus consumer products, online, recreation, books, magazines and feature films. Nickelodeon’s U.S. television network is seen in more than 98 million households and has been the number-one-rated basic cable network for 14 consecutive years. Mel Brooks Re-Animates Spaceballs!

Woot!
I'm stoked to finally see this out. I remember working with Daphne Zuniga on this back when I was still at Abrams. She's really cool, and was a lot of fun in front of the mic.

The Schwartz is finally with us! After multiple delays, 'Spaceballs: The Animated Series' is finally airing in the United States.

Spielberg Nears A Deal With Reliance

This is kinda huge.
Spielberg appears close to signing a lucrative package that would make India's Reliance Communications a 50% owner of his DreamWorks studio.

Here's the part that got me from the article.
What happens with DreamWorks Animation?

A Tale of Two DreamWorks

Spielberg still considers Universal his second home, say those close to him. The Twentieth-Century Fox studio (NWS) is considered a long shot to house DreamWorks. Whoever wins the contest to house the producer will likely strike an agreement with him to distribute the new DreamWorks' films in theaters, on DVD, and on the Internet. Spielberg's company maintains a long-standing relationship with HBO, which would continue to distribute DreamWorks films on its premium TV channel.
The new DreamWorks will be a private company separate from the publicly traded DreamWorks Animation (DWA), which was separated from the live-action unit in 2004. The newly created company being funded by Reliance would likely be nearly 50% owned by Spielberg, with his top production executive, DreamWorks CEO and Co-Chairman Stacey Snider, owning a small equity piece as well. Snider, a former Universal Pictures chairman, is considered key to the transaction and was also allowed to leave her Paramount contract as part of a "key man" provision that permitted Spielberg to take top executives with him when he left.
