Everything's Coming up Portal!

No really EVERYTHING. I'm still plugging away on Episode 1, but it's hard not to fire up Portal when Steam comes up...

Anywho if you've been needing to links to any and all Portal content that there could be head on over to geekanerd. They have a mega post up with practically every Portal related content link you could find.

THIS WAS A TRIUMPH...

And just for kicks, here's the first of 3 Youtube videos if you only want GLaDOS' dialog. The other two vids are on the link...all 25 minutes of it...

Library of Congress to start archiving video games

Heck yeah!
Take THAT Roger Ebert.

Kotaku has an impressive write up of the whole affair.

But today we have a different story for you with a very different
ending. The fact of the matter is, according to The Library of
Congress, video games are just as important to our historical past as
literature, movies and music. And at the moment, the LoC is teaming up
with major universities across the country to begin a 2-year initiative
with the sole intent of figuring out just how institutions can preserve
video games for years to come, while making the content accessible for
use and study.

Heck Yeah!

This is perfeck. Evolving from the days of Atari, gaming has consistently proved a culturally motivating force. It will be where our experimental media comes from, experimental storytelling, experimental anything. To deny the impact of gaming is shortsighted, and well, silly...

Read the story up at Kotaku, it's pretty great...

Heck Yeah!

Wow, REALLY bad Voice Acting!

And I think we can also safely say bad writing too...

Following up on my last post, check out THIS ARTICLE at Newsweek, for a look at the game Army of Two.

There are some movies on the page.

Watch them.

They are HIGH-larious.

Good voice acting is more valuable than ever...

Finally Some Video Game VO Respect?

Kotaku has a pretty good article up about the voices in God of War II. This is actually neat, as I rarely hear anything about voice acting in games (except whether or not it was good), let alone WHO was actually IN the game (unless it's an A-Lister).

The frustrations can run pretty high for those of us trying to raise a little visibility. After a client of ours booked the voice of Captain America for Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, I played the game all the way through only to find the actors credited dead last (after "Special Thanks" and the "List of Babies Born During Production").

Variety likes Video Games?

Well ok, maybe just Ben Fritz.
With interactive content becoming one of the chief competitors for film dollars in the "awesome" demographic, it's nice to see an article from time to time that DOESN'T slam gaming (or blame all of our problems with kids on it).
Check out Ben's write up in defense of gaming HERE. It's a really well written article tying in the new-ness of 300's look (visually very game-like), and how many critics are panning the film by comparing it to a game... though it went on to make $70 million it's opening weekend.

***As an aside, if you can, this is a really fun film to see at an IMax. My eye's were bleeding by the end, but it was a little slice of awesome!

Kinda Crappy: No Love For Game VO

Just finished Marvel: Ultimate Alliance on easy. Fun game. I'm watching through the credits to see my client's name (Captain America = Trev Broudy!), and ... it took a while.

A LONG WHILE...

I was waiting for a while, seeing all the names of the people that worked on the game (script, animators, mo-cap), then the Marvel folk, then the "special thanks" (wtf?), then "These are the names of the babies that were born during production" (WTF?!?!), then after a pause FINALLY the voice over people.
Last.
DEAD fuckin last.
These people aren't paid much, to yell and scream into microphones for hours, and they don't even get the courtesy of being credited above the BABY LIST!

As a gamer I'm pissed. Decent writing, art, and direction are trickling in, but as long as these performances are being treated like the fast food of performance (and paid as such), gaming as a whole will never rise above and become an "artistic" medium.
