It has been used as a deterrent device to keep teenagers from loitering in malls and shops, and sounds similar to a buzzing mosquito. Typically the longer you listen to it, the more annoying it gets. I can still hear it in one ear...

To my surprise, I could. One ear more than the other, but not the ear I expected. Now I'm trying to figure out what software on my work computer can display a waveform so I can, yanno, look at it. like ya do.

I give myself pretty regular hearing tests using the simple synthesis tone generator in Sound Forge.
Fire up any tone generator, use a sine wave, and crank it to about 17Khz. That's the mosquito.
I hear almost 18K in one ear, and just over 16K in the other.
Yep, I can hear it in my right ear. My left ear now gets tinnitus at about this frequency after some problems related to medication a few years back, and some of the top end has gone, unfortunately.
