Happy 39th Birthday Internet!

Just sent in from a reader of We Love DC, apparently 39 years ago today ARPANET was fired up for the first time.

A new age of geekery was born!

From WLDC:
A year before they fired up the ARPANET, J.C.R. Licklider wrote in Science & Technology, “What will on-line interactive communities be like? In most fields they will consist of geographically separated members, sometimes grouped in small clusters and sometimes working individually. They will be communities not of common location, but of common interest. In each field, the overall community of interest will be large enough to support a comprehensive system of field-oriented programs and data.”
 You go Internet!

  1. Wow, 39 years, that is a long time! However, considering the huge changes we have experienced with the internet, it is such a short amount of time. I can't imagine going to work without having access to a computer, or imagine going to the library to find answers that I can just google for in about two seconds. What is even harder to imagine what the internet will be like in another 39 years!
    Cheers!

  2. It is pretty incredible how small the world has gotten. It's proof we ARE a social animal, and we'll seek out connections and information.

In ANOTHER 39 years? Man I don't even know...
